Who am I?
Growing up, most of us discover something that really excites and moves us. Some discover themselves in a performing art, like painting, music or dance. Others discover the joy of sport or the beautiful logic of algorithms and code. I found a different passion – observing people around me, learning from them and decoding their behaviours.
So, did I grow up kind, empathetic and forgiving to everyone?
Kind of. I grew up in an Air Force family, and thus always had two competing streams of thought in me. On one hand, the desire to chase success and perfection in my duties at the expense of everything (including what I might be feeling!); on the other hand, a genuine kindness and empathy for the people around me.
The biggest influence on my life has been my Dad. You might be thinking that he brought the Air Force home with him: driving a strict, disciplined and efficient family. He did inculcate some of that, but there was also incredible joy and happiness when I was with him (and accompanying him to the occasional drink at the Air Force Canteen!). We were not a wealthy family, but we were a happy one.
While Dad encouraged us all the time, he asked my brother and me to stay clear of pursuing sports as a career. You might be thinking he was like all Indian parents, preferring studies over sport. But his reason was deeper. Being an athlete himself, he never had the resources or coaching needed to unlock peak physical and mental performance. It just wasn’t a viable option. I gave up sport, but what he said stuck with me.
But life isn’t a story you can flip or follow at the tap of a button. Sometimes, it happens to you. Just as I was turning into an adult and in college, I lost Dad to cancer. All kids in college lean on a trusted friend when they’re at this crucial phase of graduating and beginning their career. I had not only lost a parent but also my best friend and biggest supporter.
I felt like a ship caught in a storm, drifting wildly and aimlessly
On many days, it felt like the last chapter of my story had been written. Somewhere within, I found the strength to keep going, worked hard and found a plush IT job working on Mainframes. I did my job well and was lined up for an on-site role in the UK. But something kept gnawing away at me. I wasn’t happy with what I was doing. I needed a career that would make me happy, fulfil my passion and let me heal from all that had happened. It was time to Flip My Story.
I wasn’t going to let life happen to me; I was going to own it and rewrite its script
I loved understanding people and travelling. Exploring new places and cultures as a solo traveller helped me reflect on my journey and heal. So, I found a career that could give me all of that, and more: I became a Cabin Crew at India’s largest airline. Was the career shift easy? Absolutely not. I had no shortage of people eager to tell me what a big mistake I was making. Being a woman compounded all of this. Yet somehow, I found the ability to make my own, independent choices. I found the courage to take the plunge, flip my story and work a job I loved.
Working in aviation and hospitality for eight years taught me a great deal. I developed emotional intelligence and learnt to walk the fine lines between delighting customers with a wow experience, managing difficult conversations with grace and being polite but firm when needed. The number of first-time fliers continues to grow in India, and we should all take deep pride in that. But I can tell you that it also comes with its fair share of challenges for cabin crew! Taking care of all these passengers while maintaining safety and decorum isn’t easy: but it was the experience of a lifetime. I lived my passion by understanding the thousands of people I met every day on my flights and taking care of them.
In many ways, I was living my best life each of those 5 years. All because I dared to live with intention and own my story. So why did I quit? Because Dad’s unfulfilled wish of becoming an athlete kept calling to me. Equally loud was the voice in my hand telling me to apply my passion for understanding people to a larger purpose.
